Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Ice Cream Sandwich update starts rolling out

Samsung has started rolling out the Android 4.0 ICS update to the Galaxy Tab 7.7. The downside to the update is that users cannot download it Over The Air (OTA). Users of the device will have to download Samsung’s Kies PC software for Windows, connect the device and look for the Android 4.0 install package.  


There is however another downside. Only users in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, and the UK who have the device with model numbered GT-P6800 will be able to grab the software update. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 GT-P6810 is listed on Samsung’s official updating list and should get the ICS update soon. 
Out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 ran on Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb, has a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, has a 3MP rear facing camera and a 2MP front facing camera and weighs about 340gms. The device also boasts of the ability to make calls. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 comes in three storage variants – 16GB / 32GB / 64GB.

Windows 8 loses 'boot to desktop' option

With the release of Microsoft’s latest OS just round the corner, news about what’s being tweaked and changed keeps trickling in. Now it seems that the Redmond-based software giant has decided to disable the “boot to desktop” option. This means that every user will now be greeted by the “not-metro” screen.


While we understand that Microsoft is trying to homogenize their OS across platforms, many users might not take very kindly to the move. Most users have gotten very used to the classic Windowsinterface and like their desktops. Not being able to boot directly to it might have many of them confused. Not to mention, clicking the ‘desktop’ tile to get to the desktop is an additional step, and even then, there is no Start button for easy access to the programs.
Windows 8 is next in the lineup of operating systems from Microsoft, one that is a huge departure from their usual OS offerings - meant for desktops, tablets, and laptops (with our without touchscreens). The UI has been completely revamped and it utilizes the tile-based system that we first saw in Windows Phones.
Microsoft is taking a huge gamble with the new OS. A complete redesign of the OS and features that its users have gotten so used to might not bode so well. However, till the OS is actually out in its final form, there is no way to gauge in all accuracy how well it would do.
 

Raspberry Pi to feature Android 4.0 ICS

Last year, David Brahen, well known veteran game developer, introduced an inexpensive mini-computer for students and tech enthusiasts known as Raspberry Pi. The ultra mini-computer that was launched in January features a 700MHz ARM11 processor and 128MB of SDRAM. The Raspberry Pi is designed to run open source software including Ubuntu, Iceweasel, KOffice, Python and it is priced at $25.



Raspberry Pi is also a great alternative for inexpensive home-theater PCs and for low-power Windows desktops to run basic Internet and productivity applications. If you are already using Raspberry Pi, you should be excited to learn that you can now enjoy Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on it! That’s right, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has officially announced their plan for implementing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on its credit-card sized mini-computer.
The developers are working hard on porting Android 4.0 OS to Raspberry Pi, and they have also revealed screenshots and a video on their official blog. According to their report, hardware-accelerated graphics and videos have been running smoothly for some time. But the huge disappointment we noticed is the missing AudioFlinger (Google's audio system for Android devices) support at this moment.
The implementation of the Android platform is aimed to access different kernels and the available VideoCore binary image from GitHub. The good folks at Raspberry Pi also revealed their plan of introducing a single common platform for users. If you are excited about trying Android in advance, you might want to check their community project, Razdroid, which delivered its first non-accelerated port of Gingerbread last month.

Windows 8 allegedly leaked far ahead of launch

With the release of Windows 8 being round the corner, it’s not good news when the Redmond outfit’s OS is reportedly hitting the torrent sites.

It is reported that Windows 8 Enterprise Edition N has already been leaked onto torrent sites. This comes hot on the heels of the OS being Released To Manufacturing (RTM). The leaked version is a 64-bit copy of the new flagship OS that’s supposed to be available to the consumers on 26th October.
The special N designation is in line with the EU ruling that Windows may not ship with Windows Media Player baked into the OS, so the leak could potentially have a European origin. At the moment, there is no word on the authenticity of the torrent doing the rounds, and we do recommend staying away from unofficial copies, as a rule of thumb.
This is in line with the release schedule made public by Microsoft yesterday, according to which, MSDN subscribers can get their hands on the digital copy of Windows 8 on August 15th, with August 16th being the day when subscribers of the Microsoft Software Assurance program get access.
Microsoft plans to have Windows 8 rolled out to their existing subscriber base, with Volume Licence wielding organizations getting it second to last, on September 1st. The public release isslated for October 26th, which is when owners of Windows 7 can upgrade to Windows 8, or just outright purchase the new OS.
 

Chrome releases the next Stable Channel

Google’s Chrome team recently announced Chrome 21 as the next stable channel for their browser. Chrome 21.0.1180.57 has been updated as a stable channel for Mac and Linux, as well as 21.0.1180.60 for Windows and Chrome Frame. The latest stable release of the browser contains several new features including a new API for high-quality video and audio communication.



Chrome 21 Features: 
Today's Chrome Stable release allows users to manage several permissions, aimed to help websites and web apps to access your camera and microphone. This feature supports sites with media functionality, such as video conferencing. Such sites or web apps can request your camera and microphone for several expected actions including Allow, Deny. The new Chrome "Options" tab lets you control and define which sites can access your PC’s camera and microphone.
With this update, Chrome also delivers the getUserMedia API, which allows web apps to access a user's camera and microphone without using any external browser plugin such as Flash or Silverlight. It has been already implemented in WebRTC, which is a free and open source project designed to deliver Real-Time Communications (RTC) capabilities to the web browser. The WebRTC API is available for web developers in the ChromeDevChannel as a preview.
In the latest version of Chrome, Sketchbooks experiment also uses getUserMedia, which takes a picture of your face with the help of a webcam, converts it to a line drawing, and sends it to a robot in the Science Museum in London.
The latest stable release also brings some new and improved printing experience for GoogleCloud Print which better integrates your printers on the web. This feature will definitely help you better work with Google Drive from your phone, tablet, Chromebook, PC, and any other web-connected device you want to print from.

Stable Channel Update for Chrome OS
Google Chrome also recently announced Chrome 20 as the next stable channel for their Chrome OS. It’s supported on the following devices including Chromebooks Acer AC700, Samsung Series 5, Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550 and Cr-48, and Samsung Chromebox Series 3. This build contains several new upgrades such as stability improvements and fixes like:
1. Network dropdown in the first screen when setting up the network may not show the entire list of networks.
2. Disabling 3G mobile data on the system would cause it to become permanently disabled.
3. Enterprise customers being unable to enroll due to a timezone mismatch issue.

Dev Channel Update
The Dev channel has been updated to 22.0.1221.0 for Windows and Mac, as well as 22.0.1221.1 for Linux with some minor improvements.A complete log of changes and fixes can be found in the svnrevisionlog.
 

First Impressions: Outlook.com

Not everyday do we see a radical design change of our email inboxes. Microsoft has tweaked Hotmail along the way, but the only big redesign was during the changeover to the Windows Live branding.



However, with the new Outlook.com, things have been given what we can safely say as more than a major tweak! The idea is simple – make the offering integrate better with the Windows 8platform, complete with the Metro UI goodness.
We take a look at Outlook.com to see what it offers.

This is where it all begins! You have to head to http://outlook.com and then you land up on this page. Whatever the URL may read at the moment, simply trying to go to Live.com or Hotmail.com will take you to those respective landing pages.

We are talking about the settings options first, and not the UI etc., because of a reason! Notice the “Create an Outlook alias” option. This neatly takes us to the next step.

You select the alias ID, and are asked to verify the credentials of the account the alias is being created for.

The alias doesn’t necessarily have to be the same username as the primary ID. You can select anything that may be available, but for convenience sake, we kept the username same as the primary one.
For starters, anyone with a Hotmail account can switch over to the Outlook mail. New users can directly sign up for username @ outlook.com. Moreover, existing users can either change their Hotmail ID to an Outlook ID, or create an alias that lets both work parallel.

This is what the inbox of Outlook mail looks like. Completely redesigned, but essentially still Hotmail at the core. And yes, if you don’t like the Blue theme, you can choose from multiple colour options!
The three-column look is the default setting, with the chat option available on the far right. The command bar changes automatically, depending on the content being viewed or the placement within the service.
Towards the right of the command bar is the smiley face, which lets you access the chat tab. If you have the chat tab active, then this is what you see. Else, this place is used by Microsoft to push adverts, just like in Hotmail. They are not intrusive at all, and will not bother.

We cannot express our happiness at the ability to integrate Facebook friends in the messenger option within the mail interface! Windows Live Messenger client had this feature for a while now, but somehow the add-in in Hotmail did not get the update.

A very clean interface when you are creating a new mail. From here, you can also select which email ID this mail will be sent out from, if you have used the alias feature we had mentioned earlier.

No, we had not forgotten! The Metro UI goodness is very much present in the Outlook mail experience. To get the tiles, you need to click the downward pointing arrow next to Outlook mast on the top left of the page. This opens up the tiles for Mail, People, Calendar and SkyDrive. Except for mail and basic contact viewing, everything else will redirect you to the old interface of Hotmail. Once the likes of the Calendar and SkyDrive also get the new UI, then we would consider this the complete product.
Speaking of contacts, you can import contacts from other networks – Facebook, LinkedIn etc. However, contact management is still a bit of an issue. For example, you cannot delete a bunch of contacts (ex – like a group etc.) unless you manually select each of them. We would like the ability to mass delete contacts, if we so wish to.
Since there is complete connectivity with the SkyDrive feature and the Office Web Apps, you get the ability to create, edit and send documents from within the cloud storage service. No change in the storage space at all.
Load Outlook.com on a mobile browser, and the clean interface makes it infinitely easier to do what you were supposed to do – read and reply to emails. Definitely much more usable than the existing Hotmail interface, be it the desktop version or even the mobile version. Clearly, with the focus on tablets and smartphones with the Windows 8 OS, this change was expected, and is more than welcome.
From what we understand, the Skype calling feature directly from the inbox isn’t available yet, but will be available soon. Also, the likes of SkyDrive and other linked services need to get the redesign goodness, to look like one seamless package. We admit, this is just the preview phase for the new Outlook.com, but then again, we do expect this to evolve into something quite sleek.
Ideally, we would recommend all Hotmail users to upgrade and take Outlook for a spin. For anyone signing up for a fresh account, surely the uncluttered look with the focus on functionality while not being visually overwhelming will work for most people.
 
 

Google Delays The Nexus Q To Make It “Better,” But Pre-Order Customers Get A Free Dev Unit


Here’s hoping you weren’t planning on using one of Google’s Nexus Qs any time soon — the company has just revealed to pre-order customers that it has postponed the device’s consumer launch because users wanted more out of the curious little orb.
That said, Google’s tiny media streamer has been unceremoniously yanked from the Google Play store. All interested consumers can do now is give the company their email address for future updates on the situation, as there’s no word yet on when Google expects that full-blown launch to take place.
Thankfully, there’s a silver lining to be found here: anyone who already pre-ordered the Nexus Q will receive a developer unit (a.k.a. the existing device that Google gave out in droves at I/O) for free. Seeing how the developer device is exactly what those customers pre-ordered in the first place, I’d say they’re making out pretty nicely. Still, there are some intriguing new questions at play now — what exactly does Google plan to add to the little guy to make it more of a competitor in a space already crowded with arguably superior hardware?
An actual user interface would be a nice place to start; while the dev model connects to a television just fine, users have to select content for the Nexus Q to play from a wirelessly-connected Android device. Being able to call up YouTube videos and movies from the Google Play Store directly on the television screen (perhaps using those additional Android devices as remotes) could help the Nexus better hold its own against the Apple TV and the Boxee Box. It wouldn’t be a shock to see Google cram support for more media sources into the thing too — Netflix, Hulu, and the like would be great additions to a device that otherwise lives solely within Google’s content ecosystem.

Microsoft introduces Outlook.com as Hotmail successor

Microsoft has released a preview version of a new and social network friendly online mail service called Outlook.com, which is said to be the successor of the company's old Hotmail service. Microsoft is touting Outlook.com as a new free mail service that pulls in features of Hotmail and Exchange.


Microsoft further says the new mail service has been designed for personal/consumer user. Outlook.com is integrated with Windows and Office, and can even pull in contacts from websites such as Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Linked. The company is working to bring Skype integration to make the email more relevant for all users.
“In the Outlook.com inbox, your personal email comes alive with photos of your friends, recent status updates and Tweets that your friend has shared with you, the ability to chat and video call - all powered by an always up-to-date contact list that is connected to your social networks. And, of course, you are in control of your experience - what you share, the networks you connect to, and your personal information,” says Chris Jones, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows Live in a blog post.
As rumoured previously, the new mail client comes with cleaner and fresher UI, having lots of white space, reminiscent of Google's recent facelift of Gmail. Outlook.com also uses Exchange ActiveSync, enabling users to have more control over mail, calendar and experience on the smartphone, tablet, and the new Outlook 2013 Preview. Outlook.com is also said to be compatible with Windows 8, which is scheduled to launch on Oct. 26. This means, the new mail service will be equally friendly to touch and mouse-and-keyboard input.

Microsoft has also introduced improved spam control features that can differentiate between important e-mails and newsletters and junk mail, and place them where they belong. Launching a veiled attack on Google, Chris Jones in the blog says the company does not scan mails or attachments to show relevant ads in the mail box.
“Email is private and confidential, and most folks we’ve talked to want to keep it that way. So we keep your personal email personal. We don’t scan your email content or attachments and sell this information to advertisers or any other company, and we don’t show ads in personal conversations,” he commented.
Existing Hotmail users can upgrade to Outlook.com by simply choosing the upgrade option from their Hotmail settings. Users, however, have the option to retain their same account id with @outlook.com or get a new alias. New users can simply visit Outlook.com and create a new account.
Outlook team, meanwhile, has tweeted that a million people had signed up for the Outlook.com preview.

Ten questions: Are 'smart TVs' really that smart?

Any TV that works with anything that remotely resembles an “OS”, can connect to the Interne,t and download apps and content is labeled as a Smart TV. The idea seems simple – bring the same experience to the TV, as you would have on a smartphone or a laptop. And then some! But does that really work? We attempt to find out which features actually work, and which don’t.



Buying a laptop or a smartphone based on the spec sheet may be appreciated, but that doesn’t hold true for the Smart TV. With most other devices, you have a fair idea of what the performance might be, after one look at the spec sheet. However, with a television, you really have no generalization in terms of specifications and hardware. While technically you may compare between two LED televisions, the resulting performance may be vastly different. As a consumer, this can become quite intimidating on the shop floor, but you need to keep a few things in mind before splashing the cash on the most expensive HDTV and accessories out there!
Through this article, we are trying to illustrate the issues faced by the consumer who buy these smart TVs. After all, it is important to remember that those who are buying these TVs are mere humans, and may not be geeky or nerdy as generally presumed. Even the slightest bit of complication may stump them. And worse still, they may be sold a TV with features that they’ll probably never use, but end up paying more up-front.
Fact 1: Any long term use of apps on TV?
The idea behind portraying any TV as ”smart” is to load it with a storefront that connects users to what is technically an app download store. These are those apps that the manufacturer has approved for use on the TV. Samsung, LG, Sony etc., all have their unique application stores on the TV itself. The genres include social networking, games, streaming services, news and weather updates, shopping etc.
Reality check: Do you really need the TV to access Facebook? Or Twitter? Skype makes a bit of sense, since families can line up in front of the TV and chat with the cousin in New York! But for most of the other apps and stuff, you have the smartphone, laptop, PC and possibly even a tablet. Didn’t someone actually buy this TV to umm…watch TV? It is time TV manufacturers realize that apps don’t matter to the TV buyer. They may use them a few times, when the TV is new, and there is uniqueness to it all. But after the initial excitement dies down, how many of us actually use apps on the TV? I swear to everything that is Holy that no one I know does. Even though they may have the highest end Sony Bravia HX925 series!
Unfortunately, this does have a long-term impact on the plans of the TV manufacturers, with regards to the Content on Demand type services that may be launching soon. For example, Sony loads the Bravia televisions with a couple of on-demand content apps, and will surely look to offer more paid content soon. So, who is interested?
Fact 2: All Internet bit is confusing!
Most Smart TVs come with Wi-Fi and Ethernet capabilities built-in, while some have only Ethernet with the capability of adding Wi-Fi with a compatible dongle. If you have the TV placed somewhere you can extend the LAN cable from the router, then always prefer a wired network. Once hooked up to the Wi-Fi hotspot, you can then use the TV to view all web-based features we had talked about in the previous point.
Reality Check: I have personally had almost all my neighbours and relatives ring the doorbell, or the intercom telephone line, and ask how the Internet can be connected to their TV. Weirdly, most people aren’t aware that their TV has both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, or just Ethernet. Surely, this indicates to something going wrong on the shop floor. Are HDTVs being sold without the consumer getting the full / proper/ real information? Also, no one is willing to teach them how to connect the TV to a Wi-Fi hotspot, for example. The installation team will come, rush through installation, ensure that you can see some semblance of colours on the display, take your sign on the job card and rush off to the next job. Cannot blame them at all, considering they have too much daily workload to deal with. However, since setting up the TV is not very easy, be it for Wi-Fi, or for signing up with your “individual unique ID”, for example on one of the new Samsung TVs. I just want a simple Wi-Fi on/off button on the remote, just like you would on a laptop – show me the hotspots, and automatically hook up to them in the future. What is with 7 layers of menu to get to the option of connecting to a wireless network?
Fact 3: When did the TV become a part of your gym?
We are talking about motion control. The latest feature to be introduced into HDTVs is the ability to navigate the menu and change channels and volume via gestures using your hands. Essentially, port the one time setup at the very beginning, you can then activate this option via the predefined steps, and use gestures to control most things on the TV.
Secondly, there are motion control remotes, something that LG offers with the Cinema 3D TV range, for example. You wave the remote around like a Magic wand, and the magic happens! Sounds very convenient?
Reality Check: Actually, it isn’t. And it is slow – you spend a lot more time and energy doing the simplest tasks!
For this feature, we need to look at a couple of usage scenarios. Let us look at the very basic tasks first – changing channels, controlling volume, switching between sources, navigating between the menus and tweaking settings etc. For this, motion controls and remotes are just a pain to use. Depending on how fluent you have become with the entire process, it will take you anywhere between 100% to 200% more time to do the same task than it would if you simply picked up the conventional remote and tapped the buttons, like you have always done!
However, motion remotes have a huge advantage if you are using the TV for web browsing, social networking or playing games installed on the TV. Angry Birds will work well with a motion remote, something that the conventional remote cannot handle.
Fact 4: Is it okay to shout at the TV?
Another thing about the new age “smart” TVs is the ability to respond to voice commands. However, unlike the novelty factor that such a feature may have on smartphones, it does add a different dimension to the TV viewing experience.
Reality Check: Well, between this and motion / gesture controls, we would prefer this any day. However, how much sense do you see in talking to your TV? Particularly when you may be watching it at night, with the wife sleeping on the bed! Then there will be the inevitable issues with the audibility, your pitch, ambient noise, pronunciation and accent and with limited commands that can be understood by the system. We are fans of using the conventional remote to control tasks on the TV, and this hasn’t changed our opinion at all.
Fact 5: Too many remotes?
This brings us neatly on to our next point. We have been noticing off late that most smart TVs now come with not one but two remotes. One would be conventional type, while the other would give the impression that it has just landed from the future to bless your expenditure. Well, some users would be impressed – “look, I got two remotes with my TV, you got only one!”. But we don’t think it is anything to be proud of. In fact, this just makes the smart TV look very un-smart!
Reality Check: We don’t really see the point. As it is one remote feels more than enough. The justification gives for multiple remotes is that they are designed to offer something unique – like motion controls or a touchpad. By that logic, why has the primary remote not been tweaked ever since its evolution? Buttons have been added to it on a regular basis, and now it looks more complicated than ever. Why not clean that up a bit, give only the essential controls, remove all the not important bits, and integrate some features of the secondary remote into the primary one? We know it isn’t going to be easy, but seeing the amount of development that has gone into HDTVs recently, we wouldn’t be surprised if the various brains involved in the process actually pull it off. Just of the sake of simplicity and one less remote on the coffee table.
Fact 6: Fast, but sometimes quite ragged?
No, we are not talking about a racing driver! We are talking about the engines that handle fast moving scenes and visuals that we see in movies, videos and even advertisements. The idea is very simple – make these move more fluidly across the screen, without compromising on display quality and detailing. To give you an example of what is on offer, let us give you an example of what is on offer with various televisions.

Reality Check: We are the first of appreciate this initiative, and support it wholeheartedly. However, there is a fundamental flaw in this feature, and not necessarily its own. Let us illustrate this by multiple scenarios.
Watching a Blu-Ray / 1080p and 720p uncompressed content: This is where you should probably have the motion flow settings set to max. Not only will any fast motion scenes look a lot smoother than otherwise, but with the panel capabilities permitting, there won't be any issues like screen tear etc. What helps is that the content is the uncompressed type, and as close to how it was originally intended as possible. For the movie buffs, this is probably worth the money they have spent.
Watching compressed HD videos, DVDs or even up-scaled HD content: This content is usually the stuff you download off the Internet, and slot in somewhere between the two extremes is this scenario. May work well with motion settings, but equally may make the reproduced visuals look bad. Depends on the amount of compression that particular file has been subjected to, and artifacts may be introduced into the image, due to interpolation.
Watching standard TV (DTH, Cable etc.): This is where this settings needs to be considerably toned down. Due to the extremely compressed nature of the content broadcast by cable and DTH operators (some more than others, but compressed nevertheless), there will be issues like screen tear, jitters or ghosting. The clearest example of this is in a cricket match, when the ball running towards the boundary. With motion settings set to their max, you will see three balls running towards the boundary – with the actual one being in the centre, and shadow ones preceding and succeeding it. Essentially, the engine is getting to play with less frames than ideally it should, and is overcompensating for that. Turn this setting to Standard / Low / Clear, and the issue goes away.
The logic that is brandished around on the shop floor is that with this feature, all visuals will look more fluid and smooth, but as we have explained, that isn’t always the case.
Fact 7: LED is technically a jazzed up LCD?
On the shop floor, we are told that there are three kinds of TVs that we can choose from. One is the Plasma. The second is the LCD, which has been around for ages. The third is the LED, but that isn’t very different from an LCD! Within this, there may be either of the two technologies implemented – full LED backlighting, or EDGE LED backlighting.
Reality Check: In a nutshell, LED TVs are essentially LCD TVs, but with LED backlighting instead of the fluorescent backlighting in LCDs. Even now, there are two types of LED TVs – with EDGE backlighting or the Full Array (also known as Full LED). With the former, what you get is a line of LEDs placed on the outside edge of the panel, allowing the TVs to be slimmer than ever. You can easily identify this kind of a TV by looking at it when it is switched on and not connected to any AV source. You will see “spotlighting” around the 4 edges of the panel. While this TV may be slim, but the black levels tend to be slightly less deep than Full LEDs and the edges seem brighter than the centre of the display. While most people cannot make out the difference, the real finicky movie buffs would make this out in a second!
With Full Array, a bunch of LEDs are placed behind the screen, in multiple rows, leading to more even lighting across the panel. Another advantage is that manufacturers can deploy Local Dimming for individual LEDs, leading to deeper details in scenes – greater difference between the bright and dark areas, thanks to the dimming of the necessary LEDs individually. Even Edge LEDs are now using the Local Dimming feature, but using diffusers and guides to attempt at having a similar effect as actual dimming.
From our experience, Local Dimming works well only on full LEDs, while the attempt on edge LED televisions mostly leads to uneven brightness, usually known as the Halo effect - you see block of leaking light around a brightly lit object in the midst of black colour.
Fact 8: Contrast Ratios – Not always black and white?
This is the simplest definition of Contrast Ratio: The difference between the whitest whites and the darkest blacks that a television display can offer. The detailing and black levels of the TV depend on this – the darker the better. There are claims of enormous numbers by TV manufacturers – they will put one and follow it up with a million zeros and claim the figure is 1000000:1 or something like that. However, in reality, the numbers are much lower.
Reality check: Let us start with two examples. The Bravia HX750 series has an actual contrast ratio of 1129:1, while the HX925 has a contrast ratio of 963:1. To put this in perspective, the HX925 is the most expensive HDTV series on the entire Bravia range from Sony, while the HX750 is two notches below that.
To put it simply, the adage that the more expensive the TV, the better the performance isn’t necessarily true. And equally, take the contrast ratio numbers thrown around by TV manufacturers with a pinch of salt. We have a table of some of the TVs that we have tested (40/42-inches and above), with the actual contrast ratios, as tested.

Incidentally, the most inexpensive television range in this entire list has the best contrast ratio of all! Before the fanboys decide to attack us, (verbally, mentally, physically or otherwise), let us specify that we use the Spyder Elite benchmark (hardware + software) to derive the actual scores. Along the way, we ensure that the Contrast, Brightness, Backlight, advanced contrast and noise reduction settings are all equalized across all televisions to level the playing field. All televisions are tested in the exact same environment – lighting, room layout etc., so that all factors remain the same.
While you may get to see inflated ratios like 1,00,000:1 and above on the spec sheet, the real figures are much lower. However, to put things in perspective, we believe that scores between 900 and 1200 and above in our benchmark tests indicate very good performance, with deep blacks. Anything lesser than that, and the blacks tend to become less deep.
Fact 9: What kind of 3D works?
Well, 3D isn’t as simple as some people thing it is. The logic that all 3D TVs work the same way, but in reality, they don’t. Active 3D seems to be the most popular one around, until LG brought in the Cinema 3D range with the Passive 3D tech, technically called the Film type Patterned Retarder. Read our Active 3D versus Passive 3D feature for more details.
Reality Check: The way Active 3D works is that the battery-operated glasses rely on signals from the emitter in the TV on when to close the shutter for which eye. This rapidly opening and closing of the shutter blocks content from an individual eye at a time. The result isn’t pretty – the glasses are heavy, and the eyes tend to feel the strain after some time of viewing 3D content using the Active 3D glasses. Also, the sweet spot for this type of technology is quite limited – essentially a straight line, with only little leeway either side, which means not more than a couple of people can sit and actually enjoy 3D on a 42-46-inch TV.
Passive 3D, on the other hand, uses much lighter polarized glasses. The TV doesn’t have a transmitter, but polarizes each line of pixels into even and odd. The odd lines will be visible to the left eye, and the even numbered lines to the right eye. Since there is no active shutter, the glasses can be lighter and more comfortable for wearing for longer durations, at least for some people. Also, the viewing angles are wider than with Active 3D, which makes this a better deal for family viewing scenarios. And less strain on the eyes as well! The only drawback is that with polarized glasses, you only get a max resolution of 1920 x 540 pixels, due to the blocking of some lines.
So, the next time you go to buy a 3DTV, don’t let the guy on the shop floor tell you all 3D TVs are the same!
Fact 10: Why such poor sound quality?You have just paid Rs 2,50,000 for a 55-inch 3D LED TV, and are quite proud of that fact. Now you hope to enjoy movies in cinema quality, with surround sound. You may be forgiven for believing that – after all, the box had “3D Surround Sound” written on that in bold fonts, at multiple places. However, you may be in for a shock.
Reality Check: No matter what the price of the TV, we have found that it is the built-in speakers will be nothing short of a crushing disappointment. There will definitely be satisfactory volume punch, but LFE will not be handled well at all, and there will definitely not be any surround sound! No matter what the spec sheet may boast of, you will have to buy a separate home theater or speaker setup to actually enjoy the HDTV investment to the fullest. It is indeed a sad scene, but very true.
 

Samsung launches WP7.5-based Omnia M in India, reveals two WP8 devices


Samsung has officially launched its Windows Phone 7.5-based Omnia M smartphone in India, which was listed at various Indian online retailers last week.
Samsung has given the Omnia M a price of Rs. 16,400, unfortunately for those who may have gone ahead and bought it online, for roughly Rs. 1,600 more.
The Omnia M was showcased in May this year, and its design is reminiscent of its predecessor, the Omnia 7, except that it has no physical Windows home button.
The Samsung Omnia M S7530 is powered by a 1GHz processor coupled with 384MB of RAM, and features a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, a 5MP autofocus camera with LED flash, and a VGA front facing camera. For connectivity, the Omnia M supports 3G (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps HSUPA 5.76Mbps), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v 2.1, GPS with A-GPS support, and USB 2.0. It has  4GB of built-in storage, is 10.5mm thick, and bears a 1,500 mAh Li-on battery.
The Omnia M will come preloaded with various apps such as Marketplace, Internet Explorer 9, Sky Drive, Bing Maps, Facebook, LinkedIn and XboxLive. Also, the device has Samsung's exclusive apps like ChatOn messenger, Tango, Now, RSS Times, Photo Studio, Mini Diary, Fun Shot, Tango and All Share.
It is expected to get the Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade, unfortunately, there's no word on whether the Omnia M will be updated to the latest Windows Phone 8, though looking at the hardware specs, it does not seem likely. This gives it, like the Nokia Lumia family and other Windows Phone 7.5 devices in the market, a very short shelf life - except in the case of the Omnia M, it is almost dead on arrival. 
In the meanwhile though, two new Samsung Windows Phone 8 devices have been revealed in court documents (in the ongoing Apple versus Samsung legal battle). Codenamed the Odyssey and Marco, for now, not much is known about the two devices.
Both will apparently feature a dual-core 1.5GHz processor on the Qualcomm MSM8960 chipset, and a 2MP front-facing camera. The Odyssey has been referred to as an "iconic smartphone" by the Korean giant, and should come with a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display with a HD resolution, an 8MP rear camera, and NFC connectivity (as expected, as mobile wallet and transfer properties are supposedly built into Windows Phone 8).
According to the documents, the Samsung Marco will come with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display (800x480 pixel resolution). Other specifications include a 5MP rear camera.
Both the Samsung Windows Phone 8 devices are expected to release at roughly the same timeas the new mobile OS, in Q4 2012.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean hits Motorola Xoom tablet

If you own a Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi tablet, the wait for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is over.



Motorola Mobility, now owned by Google, on Friday announced it has begun rolling out the latest version of the Android mobile operating system, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, to U.S. owners of Motorola Xoom. Only Xoom models with Wi-Fi are currently getting the update, however. There's no word as to when users in other countries and those with the 3G and 4G versions of the Xoom tablet will be getting a taste of Jelly Bean.
"This latest version of Android is the smoothest one yet - with an improved user interface and response to your touch, people are calling it 'buttery,'" according to the announcement.
Google launched Jelly Bean last month on the Nexus 7 tablet. It has since started the rollout to the Galaxy Nexus and is also expected for the Nexus S soon. HTC also has said it is planning to roll out Jelly Bean to several of its HTC One devices.
The update offers a much smoother UI experience, offline voice dictation, offline maps, and the slightly creepy Google Now feature that uses your search history, location history, and calendar to figure out what information your might need and when.
In his review of Android 4.1, PCMag's Senior Mobile Analyst Jamie Lendino said "there's nothing revolutionary" about the new OS, though it offers a fast user interface, excellent performance, and major improvements for search and notification.
In other Android update news, AT&T on Friday announced that the LG Nitro will be getting its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update beginning on July 31.

A closer look at Windows 8's browser: Internet Explorer 10

Internet Explorer 10 serves dual roles as the default Metro and desktop browser, and its HTML5 support breaks new ground for a Microsoft browser.



Windows 8's browser, Internet Explorer 10, leads a double life. You can run it in Metro, you can run it in the traditional Windows desktop view. Underneath, however, both use the same rendering engine. This engine has been considerably improved, in both speed and support for new Web technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3. Maybe even more significantly, IE10 isn't just the browser for Windows 8, it actually becomes the underlying engine that powers Metro style applications that use HTML5 and JavaScript. When you realize that, it becomes clear that Internet Explorer 10 is a crucial piece of the Windows 8 puzzle.
At the moment, Microsoft is only making the preview version of IE10 available for Windows 8 Release Preview, but, at release, it will be available for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012. Microsoft made a big push with IE9 for more standards support, and, indeed, that browser version far outstrips what IE8 offered. This is of particular importance for Windows 8's role as a tablet operating system, even though the Metro (the touch-tablet-centric part of Windows 8) guise of IE10 will include the Adobe Flash plugin built-in, as Google Chrome does. But more and more sites are relying on HTML5 to take over that plugin's functions.
Windows 8One gauge of HTML5 readiness is the HTML5Test.com site, which reports a score based on how many HTML5 features it supports, along with bonus points for non-standard-specific extras like video codecs. Out of a possible 500, IE9 earns a score of 138, compared with 414 for Google Chrome. IE10 changes this picture considerably, with a score of 319 and 6 bonus points.
But that score isn't the whole story. Far from it. HTML5Test.com merely checks for that the feature is recognized, not whether it's correctly implemented. On the IETestdrive site, Microsoft has published dozens of proof-of-concept demos showing exactly what a lot of these HTML5 features can do. You can peruse the IEBlog to read about the tons of work the IE team has done to add bleeding-edge support to the browser. Though it's often stated that Chrome and Firefox are ahead of IE in HTML5 support, some of the test drive demos show that those browsers haven't yet implemented every capability. One example is Touch Events, which lets a webpage respond to gestures.
Atop all those underlying Web technology updates, however, there's an app interface you use to browse the Web, and the main changes here are in the Metro version of IE10. Let's look at how this clean, minimalist design, full-screen, touch-friendly new interface handles your daily browsing needs. After that, I'll look at some comparative benchmark numbers.
